Charge an EV for Half the Cost of Gas
With gas prices in San José averaging over $5 a gallon, many people are looking for ways to save money on everyday driving. One smart option is switching to an electric vehicle (EV) and putting gas prices in the rear-view mirror.
Charging an EV at home costs around the same as paying $1.93 per gallon of gas, allowing EV drivers to save over 65% on their fuel costs. Based on average driving habits, that means saving over $120 a month on fuel compared to paying $5.50 at the pump for gas*.
EVs also cost less to maintain because they have fewer moving parts, don’t need oil changes, and use regenerative braking, which helps reduce wear on brake parts.
Save thousands when you purchase an EV
San José Clean Energy’s EV Instant Rebates program offers income-qualified customers thousands in savings on electric vehicles – right off the sale price. The rebates can be applied to purchases or leases and provide:
- $4,000 off a new EV
- $2,000 off a used EV
There are over 75 participating dealerships in the Bay Area. Even better, EV Instant Rebates can be combined with other incentive programs like PG&E’s pre-owned rebate, Clean Cars for All, and the Driving Clean Assistance Program (DCAP), making it possible for income-eligible customers to save up to $18,000 on a used EV.
When added to the ongoing savings on fuel and maintenance, driving an EV can become one of the most affordable transportation choices.

Save even more when charging at home
San José Clean Energy now offers two ways to save when charging your EV at home. With Peak Rewards for Smart Homes, you can choose to enroll your EV or EV charger to manage when you are charging – saving you money on charging costs while earning credits on your electric bill:
EV Managed Charging: Get a $25 enrollment bonus just for signing up plus up to $36 extra per year – by allowing your EV to automatically pause charging when electricity demand is highest (up to 3-4 times per month).
Midday Bonus: Earn up to $160 per year by charging your EV between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. – the equivalent of saving 20% on charging rates during this time.
