SAVE WITH TIME-OF-USE RATES

Saving electricity when demand for energy is high is important to support a cleaner and more reliable energy grid in California. Many customers are now on time-of-use (TOU) rates with higher electric rates during peak hours, so you have an extra incentive to conserve energy – to save money! Easy steps and habits to put in place now

Turn off lights when not in use. Also turn off and unplug electronics and appliances when you’re not using them.
- If you haven’t yet, upgrade all incandescent lightbulbs to LED lightbulbs. They use up to 90% less energy and last up to 25 times longer!
Water heating accounts for about 14% of electricity use in US homes. Save water, energy, and money with these tips:
- Lower the temperature on your water heater to 120 degrees or lower. Use this guide.
- Take shorter showers and less frequent baths.
- Use cold water for most laundry loads.
- Don’t let the water run when hand washing dishes or brushing your teeth!
- Upgrade to energy efficient appliances that use less water.
Participate in a demand response program: pitch in to lower your electricity for 1-2 hours when energy demand spikes. You’ll lower energy use, reduce high energy prices, and even avoid building polluting power plants. And you get paid to take part!

Save energy during cooler months

Let natural sunlight in to naturally heat your home. Remember to close blinds and windows at night to better retain heat.
Layer up and lower the temperature on your thermostat – just five degrees lower can save about 10% on your bill.
Adjust your water heater a few degrees lower to save on your bill. Most people have the temperature set too high, so you may not even notice the difference.

Save energy during warmer months

Replace or clean your A/C unit’s filters to lower its energy consumption by up to 15%. Use this guide.
Pre-cool your home by opening windows on cooler nights and early mornings. Shut windows and sliding doors before the day starts heating up, usually around 10am.
Opt for fans before turning on the A/C. Remember that fans cool people, not spaces, so you can turn them off when you leave the room.
Consider grilling outside instead of using the oven.
Air dry clothes instead of using the dryer.
