San José Clean Energy Ranks Sixth in 2024 Green Power Program

San José Clean Energy (SJCE) earned a top 10 ranking from the National Renewable Energy Lab (NREL) for the number of Community Choice Aggregation (CCA) customers receiving renewable energy. Ranked sixth on NREL’s 2023 CCA Green Power Customers list, SJCE is proud to serve nearly 350,000 customer accounts with clean, renewable energy.

The annual rankings highlight exceptional green power programs across the country. NREL began including CCAs last year, recognizing their growing impact in the renewable energy space. The CCA Green Power Customers list counts all customers purchasing a product with more renewable energy than required by state renewable portfolio standards. San José Clean Energy’s standard service provides customers with 60% renewable energy, which exceeds the state’s requirement of 44% by 2024. SJCE also offers an upgraded service for only a few more dollars a month, allowing customers to receive 100% clean energy year-round. SJCE’s inclusion on the 2023 list demonstrates its success in meeting the growing demand for renewable energy among San José’s residents and businesses.

“Thanks to concerned community members who pushed us to move faster on clean energy, San José now operates the largest single-jurisdiction CCA in the country with one of the cleanest power mixes around,” San José Mayor Matt Mahan said. “San José was the first major U.S. city to set the ambitious goal of achieving carbon-neutrality by 2030, and SJCE is showing we will use every lever at our disposal to meet it for the sake of our children and all future generations.”

San José Clean Energy celebrated five years of service to the city’s nearly one million residents and businesses this year. Since launching in 2019, SJCE has contracted for over one gigawatt of renewable energy, enough to power nearly 600,000 average homes in San José. SJCE has also kept nearly five million metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions out of the air thanks to a wide range of clean energy sources including solar, wind, battery storage, and geothermal power.
