ELIGIBILITY

To qualify for the San José Home Appliance Savings Program, participants (i.e., the PG&E account holder) must meet all of the following criteria:

Be a San José Clean Energy customer
- SJCE is the default electric generation service provider for San José residents. Most customers were enrolled in 2019, and rooftop solar customers were enrolled in 2020 and 2021.
- Check your most recent PG&E bill and look for “SJCE electric generation charges” to check if you are an active customer.

Live in a single-family home
For the purpose of the Program, a single-family home is defined as “a free-standing residential building.” Single-family homes are designed to be used as a single-dwelling unit with one owner or tenant. For specifics, read our FAQ below.
Live in one of the program’s qualifying neighborhoods OR meet the income guidelines
- Use this online lookup tool to check if you live in a qualifying neighborhood. Click on the magnifying glass to search for your address. If you don’t qualify based on your address, check if you meet the program’s income guidelines as defined below.
- Tip: If you are enrolled in the California Alternate Rates for Energy (CARE) or Family Electric Rate Assistance (FERA) program, you meet the income guidelines.
- Note: Customers who meet the CARE income guidelines do not qualify for the refrigerators (see program Terms and Conditions). However, you may qualify for a refrigerator replacement through PG&E’s Energy Savings Assistance (ESA) Program.

Review the eligibility requirements above and the terms and conditions.
If you find you are not eligible for our program, don’t worry! You may qualify for rebates on appliances, smart thermostats, insulation, and other saving measures from BayREN and PG&E that do not have income limits.

Rapid Rebate Portal

Get money back for your qualifying appliance purchase.

Once you’ve purchased your eligible appliance(s), use the corresponding Rapid Rebate Portal below to receive money back. You’ll need to submit a copy of your receipt.

Once your rebate application is reviewed, your check will be mailed to the mailing address on your PG&E/SJCE account within 6 to 8 weeks.

Franklin Energy verifies program eligibility, manages discount codes, issues rebates, communicates application status, and provides customer service for inquiries related to the program. San José Home Appliance Savings Program discounts are only applicable at the Bascom Ave Airport Home Appliance location at this time. Airport Appliance will manage your sales and delivery experience, and Franklin Energy can assist you with the application process for the rebate.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How much money can I save with this program?

Your savings will vary depending on the appliance or free offer you select. Participants stand to save $1,500 on the purchase of a new washer/dryer combo, for example, plus long-term cost savings from lower energy usage.

Can I buy more than one appliance through this program?

Yes, participants may purchase one (1) of each type of appliance through the program as well as up to one (1) of each type of smart technology. The maximum that a participants could purchase would be: (1) refrigerator, (1) washer, (1) dryer, (1) smart thermostat, and (1) smart power strip.

Do I need to be a homeowner to get the appliance discount?

No, you do not need to be a homeowner. Renters can qualify for this program if they are the PG&E account holder for the property.

For the smart thermostat offering, tenants will need to attest that they received permission from their landlord or property owner to qualify.

How do I confirm that I’m an SJCE customer?

SJCE has been the default electric generation service provider for all San José residents since February 2019. Rooftop solar customers were enrolled in 2020 and 2021. We notify all customers of their enrollment.

Check your most recent PG&E bill and look for “SJCE electric generation charges” to check if you are an active customer.

How do you define a single-family home?

For the purpose of the Program, a single-family home is defined as “a free-standing residential building.” Single-family homes are designed to be used as a single-dwelling unit with one owner or tenant.

Apartments, condominiums, and master-metered mobile homes are not eligible to participate in the program. You may live in a master-metered mobile home if you do not receive an individual electric bill for your mobile home.

Apartments and condominiums may qualify for BayREN’s and PG&E’s energy efficiency programs.

What is a disadvantaged community?

Disadvantaged communities as defined by the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) are the areas throughout California that most suffer from a combination of economic, health, and environmental burdens. These burdens include poverty, high unemployment, air and water pollution, the presence of hazardous wastes as well as high incidence of asthma and heart disease. Learn more on the CPUC’s website.

In SJCE’s San José Home Appliance Savings Program, customers who live in qualifying neighborhoods are eligible for the program. Qualifying neighborhoods score in the top 75th percentile of disadvantaged communities in California. Enter your address into this map to see if you live in a disadvantaged community.

What does ENERGY STAR ® certified mean?

Appliances with ENERGY STAR labels meet strict energy-efficiency requirements set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. ENERGY STAR-certified products are third-party certified and subject to ongoing verification testing. Products that have earned the ENERGY STAR help you save energy and money without sacrificing performance. By using less energy, these products also help reduce greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to climate change.

Can more than one person in a household qualify for the program?

No, the program is limited to one person per household. Only the PG&E account holder can participate in the program.

How can I buy the appliance? In-person? Online?

Once you receive a discount code from Franklin Energy, you can apply the point-of-sale discount at Airport Appliance to make a purchase in person ONLY. Online purchasing is not available for this program at this time.

I bought an eligible appliance before I knew about this program. I believe I meet the qualifying criteria to participate. How do I get a rebate?

Sorry, but to participate and qualify for a rebate, you must have completed the program interest form prior to purchase.

How do I verify that I bought a qualifying appliance?

The San José Home Appliance Program webpage has a current list of products that are offered through the program. Appliances must be purchased at Airport Appliance with the discount code sent by Franklin Energy after you confirm your eligibility using the interest form above.

Where do I find installation instructions for my smart thermostat?

How will the rebate be delivered? Via check?

Yes, the rebate check will be delivered via mail to the account holder at the mailing address on their PG&E account.

How long will I wait for my rebate?

Participants can expect to receive their rebate check 6 to 8 weeks from the time of rapid rebate application submission. Customers will be notified when their rebate check is on its way.

What do free delivery and installation entail?

Participants who purchase appliances will receive free delivery, installation, haul away, and a 5 year warranty from Airport Appliance.

Airport Appliance covers delivery up to two flights of stairs and basic installation and hookup for refrigerators, washers, and dryers offered through the program. This includes providing and installing a stacking kit for customers who need to stack their washer and dryer.

Airport Appliance has the following requirements for service:

Power outlet 4 ft near the appliance (unobstructed)
For dryers:
- Installed venting up to code within 6 ft of dryer
- 220 dryer outlet (4 prong or 3 prong ok)

Does the program include haul away for my old appliance?

Yes, Airport Appliance staff will haul away your old appliance for free when they deliver your purchase.

Is this a limited-time program?

SJCE will administer this program through December 31, 2024, or until funds are exhausted, whichever comes first. Models and incentives may vary during this time.

I don’t live in a qualifying neighborhood or meet the income guidelines. What energy efficiency programs are available for me?

You may qualify for BayREN’s and PG&E’s energy efficiency programs.

BayREN’s Home+ program offers a free energy audit and rebates on insulation, air sealing, ducts, heat pump water heaters, induction cooktops/ranges, heat pumps for space heating/cooling, heat pump dryers, and high-efficiency air conditioners to single-family homeowners in the Bay Area whose home was built in 2016 or earlier.

PG&E offers rebates on smart thermostats and heat pump water heaters to all households until November 1, 2022 and free refrigerators, insulation, weatherproofing, efficient light bulbs, caulking, and furnace and water heater repair or replacement for CARE customers.

I don’t live in a single-family home. What programs are available for me?

Apartments and condominiums may qualify for BayREN’s and PG&E’s energy efficiency programs.

I opted out of SJCE but I want to participate in the program. How do I re-enroll?

If you opted out before starting service with SJCE or within the first 60 days of service, you may easily re-enroll on our website or by phone at (833) 432-2454. If you opted out after the first 60 days of service with SJCE, you’re required to stay with PG&E for one year before returning to SJCE.

Depending on your meter read date and bill cycle, your SJCE enrollment may not be effective immediately. Our customer service team will let you know when you can expect to be an active SJCE customer eligible for the San José Home Appliance Savings Program.

If you opted out after the first 60 days of SJCE service and have not yet reached the 1-year mark, we’re sorry but you are not eligible to re-enroll at this time. You may qualify for BayREN’s and PG&E’s energy efficiency programs.

I am a homeowner with a single-family home that I rent to tenants. I am the account holder and meet qualifying criteria. Can I use this program to purchase an appliance for my rental property?

Yes, if the applicant (PG&E account holder and in this case, landlord) meets the eligibility criteria you can participate in the program if the intended use for the appliance will be at the single-family home.

I don’t live in a single-family home, but I want to buy an appliance for a relative who does. How can I do this?

Only customers who meet all qualifying criteria may participate, and the appliances must be installed at the property associated with the account holder’s PG&E account.

How is this program funded?

This program is funded by Public Purpose funds collected on electricity customer bills that are allocated to utilities by the California Public Utilities Commission. In addition, the San José City Council allocated $500,000 from federal relief funds to support this program.

Can I use this program to buy an appliance for a house that is not in San Jose?

No, the program is only intended for single-family residents in San Jose.

Can I decline installation from Airport Appliance?

No. Airport Appliance must install the appliance.

What is modified adjusted gross income (MAGI)? How do I calculate it or find it on my tax return?

Typically, your MAGI (modified adjusted gross income) and AGI (adjusted gross income) are close in value to one another. Modified adjusted gross income (MAGI) refers to your adjusted gross income (AGI) after factoring in certain allowable deductions and tax penalties.
