The City of San José has once again been named to the CDP Cities A List for 2025. This is the highest score a city can earn from CDP, formerly known as the Carbon Disclosure Project – a global organization that tracks climate action. San José earned an “A” for being transparent with its climate data, planning ahead, and taking real action to fight climate change.

Leading the World

In 2025, only 120 cities worldwide earned an A score, placing the city in a small group of climate leaders.

San José has received an A score for multiple years in a row, reflecting years of hard work to:

  • Expand clean energy
  • Electrify buildings and transportation
  • Plan for climate risks like extreme heat and flooding
  • Share clear and honest updates with the public

Powered By Community

This achievement would not be possible without the community’s support.

“Earning a spot on the CDP A List year after year shows the strength of our collective commitment,” said City Manager Jennifer Maguire. “This recognition belongs to the many City departments, community partners, residents, and businesses working every day to make San José healthier and more resilient. We remain focused on real progress that improves people’s lives.”

Mayor Matt Mahan also praised the City’s approach. “This A List ranking reflects our practical, results-driven approach to climate action,” he said. “We will keep advancing a future where environmental progress leads to healthier and more vibrant communities.”

Clean Energy Is Key to Success

One of the biggest reasons for San José’s strong climate performance is Climate Smart San José, the City’s climate action plan. The plan sets bold goals to cut greenhouse gas emissions, increase renewable energy, and electrify homes and transportation.

A major driver of this work comes from your community-owned, clean electricity provider, San José Clean Energy (SJCE). SJCE provides clean electricity to about one million residents and businesses. In 2024, every SJCE customer received at least 65% renewable energy—nearly three times more than customers of investor-owned utilities during the same period.

San José remains committed to building a cleaner, safer, and more resilient future—and this global recognition shows that the City is on the right path.
