SJCE sets our electricity rates with you in mind. That’s why we created SJ Cares to improve affordability for customers with low incomes. CARE and FERA customers automatically receive an additional 10% discount on SJCE charges.
The energy content consists of 60% renewable energy and up to 95% carbon-free power. Non-renewable carbon-free sources are a combination of large hydroelectric and nuclear, the proportion of which will be confirmed by the end of 2023.
The remaining 5% is California grid system power. This electricity comes from unspecified sources, such as electricity traded through open-market transactions, that aren’t traceable to a specific generation facility. They may include renewables and hydroelectric.
What is SJ Cares?
SJ Cares offers customers enrolled in CARE (California Alternate Rates for Electricity) or FERA (Family Electric Rate Assistance) an extra 10% off SJCE’s charges for electric generation. This is in addition to the discount received from CARE or FERA. That means SJ Cares customers pay the lowest rates in San José!
CARE/FERA customers are automatically enrolled in SJ Cares – no action is needed. For more information on CARE and FERA, visit our Discount Programs page.
Can I apply for SJ Cares?
No. All customers enrolled in California Alternate Rates for Electricity (CARE) and Family Electric Rate Assistance (FERA) programs are automatically enrolled in SJ Cares by SJCE. Customers do not need to apply. Customers will receive SJ Cares rates as long as they stay enrolled in CARE or FERA.
How do I apply for CARE or FERA so I can become eligible for SJ Cares?
The California Alternate Rates for Electricity (CARE) and Family Electric Rate Assistance (FERA) are state programs administered by PG&E. Customers must apply for CARE or FERA through PG&E. Learn more on our Discount Programs page or PG&E’s website.
How can I verify that I’m receiving this discount?
Your SJ Cares discount will appear as a line item on the SJCE portion of your bill (usually page 4 of your PG&E bill).
