As a Community Choice Energy program, we’re committed to adding renewable energy to the grid and finding solutions to improve reliability for the health of our customers and planet. We build and source clean electricity for you so just by being our customer, you’re helping to improve air quality, reduce pollution, and fight climate change.

We play a crucial role in meeting San José’s ambitious carbon neutral by 2030 goal and providing renewable energy during more hours of the day. SJCE is a major part of Climate Smart San José, the city’s climate action plan.

Founded and Operated By Our Community

The San José City Council unanimously voted to create SJCE in May 2017.

SJCE is governed by your San José City Council, with input from a Community Advisory Commission. All SJCE decisions are made by Council during public meetings, where customers are welcome to speak and give feedback:

City Council meets every Tuesday at 1:30 pm. City Council Agendas are posted one week in advance, and meetings are livestreamed. To watch or participate in a meeting visit the City website.
The Advisory Commission meets monthly. Advisory Commission agendas are posted one week in advance.

More About Community Choice

SJCE is part of a group of Community Choice Aggregators (CCAs), also known as Community Choice Energy (CCE) programs, serving more than 11 million customers in over 200 counties, cities, and towns in California. More CCAs will be formed in the near future.

CCAs provide competitively priced clean energy options to customers and reinvest revenues into our communities to achieve greenhouse gas reductions and health benefits. CCAs will continue to collectively make progress toward a clean energy future by investing in long term projects that will result in more than 11,000 megawatts (MW) of new renewable energy for the California grid.

We are public agencies led by staff with decades of experience in the energy industry and municipal utilities. As not-for-profits, CCAs keep costs competitive by not having shareholders and maintaining a public service culture of customer accountability.

CCAs operate under various models which include:

Types of CCAs

Single jurisdiction – A city or county individually establishes and operates a CCA as an enterprise fund within the municipality.
Joint Powers Authority – an independent, public agency that operates a CCA on behalf of its member municipalities.
Hybrid Joint Powers Authority – communities contract for the services that they need to operate a CCA by joining an existing joint powers authority as an associate member.
Commercial Vendor Package – a private company manages the CCA on behalf of local government(s).
